How to Cut Curly Hair! (Melanie)

So I have this un-tamable curly hair. It has taken me years and years to even feel comfortable with it on my head, but I have grown to love it...and to only trust a few select people to cut it. Namely, my mom, and a certain lady at the Trade Secret at the Washington Square Mall in Portland, Oregon. Oh! And myself.

I cut my own hair more than anyone else cuts my hair, because I feel like if I let anyone else do it, they wouldn't do it quite right, and I would feel bad blaming anyone else for my hair not turning out the way I want. I've made some grand mistakes...and I think I've finally got it down to a point where I feel comfortable giving other people the tips! DISCLAIMER: By no means is this a perfect way or art. This works for my hair and I hope to give some tips that will help you in your quest to cut your own curly hair! (or straight hair, actually)

I am going to cut my hair shorter, and layer it. I'm kind of afraid of layering too high up, so it usually takes a couple tries for me to get the layering exactly how I want it.

This is my hair currently (pre-cut). I straighten my hair before I cut it.
It makes the hair more manageable to me, and I can see exactly
where I'm cutting and where my hair will lay and everything.

As you can see, I have my straightener, my hair brush, and
my scissors from 4th grade (which I kept forgetting to return...oops).
Obviously hair-cutting scissors would do a better job, this is just
what I've been using for EVER.

This is also a pre-cut shot. This is how I tried to layer my hair last time.
I put my head down sideways and cut straight across. That didn't work.
It gave me a kind of mullet-type ish thing. It was awful. DON'T DO THIS!

To begin, part your hair how you want it, and then cut everything the same
length. This is how long you want your longest layer to be. Keep in mind,
this layer will get a little bit shorter, because you will blend everything later.

Next I pin up everything but the bottom, so I can make sure the bottom
layer is straight. You can see here that the front is longer than the back. That
will usually happen, unless you take the time to fix it. I basically just work it
until it's all the same length. I didn't have another mirror or a medicine cabinet
to play with to see the back, so I was just guessing and turning around a lot.

Yay! Everything is the same length! It looks like a shelf, which is a BAD thing
for curly hair, but I promise, it's not the end yet!

I pulled a part over just to make sure EVERYTHING was the same length.
This is all before I being layering my hair. Extra snipping and double-double
checking is not a bad thing. This usually doesn't take me more than 2 hours
(which I know is a long time, but usually it's closer to 1 hour)

See how this is all the same length? Now we can start layering!!

So I pin up everything but the bottom layer. To layer, hold the scissors
so the point is upwards, and just cut upwards and outwards, so the flat of the
blades are parallel to your head. You do this for every layer of hair that you
bring down. This helps your hair not have the 'shelf' look at the bottom.
Mine still did after this specific part, because, like I said, I'm afraid of
layering too much.

Terrible pictures, I know, but this is the end, after blending. I didn't take
a picture of blending. But, what you do is point the scissors upwards again,
and instead of cutting outwards, put the blades perpendicular to your head
and cut upwards in little snips so that the layers blend together.

Let me know how it goes!

Adventures: The River Trail (Megan)

Something of a blustery Saturday, but it was perfect for a bike ride along the River Trail.

I loved this spot where the beautiful trees lean over the pathway like nature's cathedral. I wanted to get more photos but forgot my memory card.

Going biking was a great work out and gorgeous trail. Biking alone isn't smart so bring a friend and have fun while you're being safe. Between the two of us we only got lost once!
We made it all the way out to the lake which was a goal for me ever since I was a little kid who couldn't bike very far. I got something off my summer adventure list and had an awesome memorial day weekend.

Art: The First (Megan)

My respect for all bloggers has suddenly shot through the roof. I had no idea how intimidating blogging could be. I've tried multiple times to post, but found myself staring at a blank page for longer than I care to admit.
To counter this intimidation I've decided to Blog in the area where I feel most comfortable–art!

These were all on display for a while, and the two below are recent additions.

These were created by splatter painting with red and black paint on white paper and then cutting them to the desired form. I then mounted them on black matte and called it finished. I love playing with the negative space and strong contrast. If you are having a bad day I recommend splatter painting a blank page to your heart's content. It will make you feel better I promise!

Hopefully you'll be hearing more from me as overcome my blogging timidness.

Eager Eats: Voodoo Doughnut (Melanie)

Chad and I love watching the Food Network. One of Chad's favorite shows on it is Man Vs. Food. They went to Portland once and they went to Voodoo Doughnut. Living my teenage years in Portland, of course I knew about it, but I hate driving in downtown Portland and I had never been with my friends when they had gone. So, we decided to go, and to take my 12 year old brother Nicholas with us. I had no idea what to expect other than Bacon Maple Bars and a bucket of doughnuts!

Thankfully Chad drove into Portland :D He makes me so happy!

Here they are about to walk in!
This is the picture from the overall trip to Oregon.

Here's the funky sign.
Honestly, I was getting a little nervous that it was
going to be a weird Portland place that I really didn't
want to be, but it turned out just to be a little different.
They had wacky chandeliers and such. It was great!

So we got a bucket of day-old-doughnuts for $5!!!
We had to eat 6 doughnuts just to get the lid on the top!

It wasn't a small bucket either.

They were really good for being a day old! The doughnuts
with cereal on the top were a little weird, but the rest were sooo good!

My favorite were the buttermilk bars. I'd never had them before.

If you've never been to Voodoo, go. It's getting a good rating from me!
Plus, they were really helpful and they had really quick service! 5 stars!

Adventures: Oregon! (Melanie)

It's been a couple weeks, and a lot has happened! Chad and I went to Oregon to see my family, and we had quite the adventures there!

Here are some pictures of things we saw on our way there:

I don't know if you can see it, it's really hard to tell
in the photos, but there are a butt-load of birds
in this tree!!!

I also love taking pictures of landscapes/beautiful things,
so when I saw these clouds, I was just awestruck. I love
it when you can see the clouds in the sky, versus just on the sky.

Then we stopped at Buffalo Wild Wings for lunch. It was so yummy!
We've been there before, so this time we got our favorites.
After the first round of Mango Habañero, nothing else was very spicy.

Then the windmills and the tree farms started creeping up,
and we knew we were in Oregon (not just from the "Welcome
to Oregon" sign...)

Then, of course, the inevitable rain.

Next, we helped Mom and Nick replace the sink in the kids' bathroom. Sadly, I didn't get a picture of Chad under the sink, but someone got one of me!

Here's Mom (and Chad's feet), showing us how it's done.

Then Nick, he fits the best under the sink.

And me...

Nick took pictures of me writing thank you notes from our wedding...
ouch...4 months late.

Here's a sneak peek at our Voodoo Doughnut excursion into Portland:

This is Kida, our dog. My family got her in the same trip when
they dropped me off at college. She's a mini Aussie, adorable,
and she has the longest tongue of any you have ever seen.

Then, on our way back:

Multinomah Falls, as we pass! If you've never been, you need
to go see it. It is magnificent and breathtaking, especially
if you hike up to the bridge.

That's all folks, enjoy the day, and I hope it's sunny where you are!

Active Adventures: Monday's Moments (Melanie)

This week is a special week! Yesterday was my husband Chad's birthday, and we had his sister and brother-in-law over for dinner and dessert! Sadly, I forgot to take pictures!!! :(

Chad is also interning in LA at an accounting firm there and they needed a business picture for his profile there, so I spent a while trying to get the camera to work, we were both getting frustrated by the end when I got this darling picture of him:

This week is also the ten-year anniversary of my baby brother Joshua Ronald Boss's passing.
I can't believe it's been so long! At his funeral we had these beautiful flowers, Star-Gazer Lilies. I took a picture of these lilies at the flower-mart in down-town LA in December, thinking exactly of this week.

I'm so excited that Chad and I get to spend this upcoming week and
the actual anniversary with my family in Oregon!

Active Adventures: Weekend Randomness (Melanie)

Active Adventures is really just pictures and stories of everything else that isn't included in the loads of other tabs we have :D this is where we share about life and its occurrences.

Last weekend Chad and I went to my grandparents' house for Easter. My Grandma Nell had just finished a puzzle and was trying to put it away, but it was putting up quite the struggle:

Crazy huh!? That thing had been sitting outside in the storage shed for probably 4 years or so...

My Grandma Nell's sister, Ann, has a ranch just down the hill, and they were shearing sheep that weekend, so we got to go down and watch.

These are all the sheep holed up in the barn.

These ones are next!!!

This is the guy shearing the sheep.

Isn't she cute!!!

These ones have been sheared. They told me that the reason they shear them,
is so that they can feel when they're lambs are cold and then they'll take care of them.

Then, this past Saturday I had a Relief Society breakfast and there were these Pinterest-reminiscent center pieces, so I just had to take a picture!

Then today, this morning, this is our street...There's a hot-air balloon landing in our street. What? It looked like it was about to hit the house, but I think it was fine. I had to take Chad to work, so I'm not sure what happened, but from what I know, landing is a pretty long process.

Well, that's all folks! I'm going to Oregon this week, so look for updates on Voodoo Donuts, ribs, Buffalo Wild Wings etc. It's going to be great!
